METRO Takes 1st Place in the Guacamole Bowl!

11th Annual Law Enforcement vs. Kiwanis Challenge Guacamole bowl. The event is held annually in Balboa Park at the Balboa Park Club benefiting Sports for Exceptional Athletes. Retired San Diego Police Officer Matt Weathersby came up with this unique fundraising idea as a way of supporting local charities. This year's charity is SPORTS for Exceptional Athletes. Over the past ten years, the Guacamole Bowl, co-sponsored by San Diego Park & Recreation-Therapeutic Recreation Services, has raised over $81,000 to support local programs for athletes with developmental disabilities.

According to Weathersby, over 2,000 pounds of fresh avocados donated by Calavo Growers, Inc. will be used by the various teams along with lots of onions, tomatoes, cilantro and jalapenos, provided by Jordano's, to the competing teams. Matt Weathersby added, "If you like good guacamole, and lots of it, then Balboa Park is the place to be."

MOvember: Raising Funds While Raising Awareness

METRO employees reached out to several charitable organizations throughout 2013.Nearly $1,000 was raised during October for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Funds were raised through employee casual dress purchases, in-branch "pink" item sales, and member donations.

Most recently, in November METRO participated in "MOvember," a global charity that supports world-class men's health programs that combat prostate and testicular cancer. During MOvember, men grow - and women support - a MO (moustache) for 30 days raising funds and becoming walking, talking billboards for the cause, which began in Melbourne, Australia in 2003.

Eleven METRO-men participated in the MO campaign, starting the month off clean shaven. The results of their efforts are immortalized in the photo above. Through bake sales, lunch purchases and donations, just under $1,900 was raised.

A special thanks to all the METRO staff and members who generously pledged their support to these charities.

    FREE Workshop: Women and Investing

    Date
    : November 20, 2013
    Time: 6:00 pm

There are differences in the way men and women journey through their lives. Historically, women have earned less, and lived longer than men. Their careers are often interrupted to care for family, and the career "breaks" that women take more frequently than men mean they often receive smaller pension checks when they retire. Yet, 80% to 90% of women will be responsible for their own finances at some point in their lives.*

For these reasons, women need to prepare more than men for their future financial needs. In other words, they need to invest more. If you are a woman interested in learning how to become a successful lifelong investor, join us for a no-cost, no obligation Women and Investing Seminar on Wednesday, November 20, 2013, 6:00 pm at our Parkway Branch in El Cajon.

This seminar will help you learn to be a careful, competent, disciplined long-term investor, and can help you attain the financial security you seek for yourself and those you're close to. We'll focus on the importance of taking control of your own future through investing, and we'll discuss investment principles and opportunities such as asset allocation, investor behavior, mutual funds and annuities. For more information, or to reserve your place at the seminar, please call Wendy Cundari at 619-278-5992.
