As a credit union and business based in San Diego, San Diego Metropolitan Credit Union (METRO) has faced many financial challenges over the last several years, similar to what our Membership has been and is currently facing. Although the U.S. Government reported the recession ended in June of 2009, San Diego County is seemingly moving at a much slower pace.
The San Diego region does appear to be stabilizing, but is not yet staging a comeback. Unemployment remains high at 10.2%, which impacts our Members' lives and their ability to repay loans. As a result, METRO’S loan losses peaked in 2010.
Because of increased loan delinquencies, higher loan losses, increases to loan loss reserves and losses members have sustained in real estate values linked to the economic downturn, METRO has also had to tighten its loan underwriting standards to limit risk. Thus, METRO had to reduce the number of loans we can make to members, therefore reducing our loan income. In addition, stronger regulatory requirements have increased compliance costs. As a result, we are looking for additional ways to reduce our operating costs and to improve our net income.
The steps outlined below are designed to return METRO to profitability while minimizing disruptions in service to our Members. We appreciate your patience and support as we weather these tough times together. We are proud to be your credit union, to have served our Members in San Diego since 1934, and look forward to serving your needs for many years to come.
As of Friday, September 30, 2011, we have closed two branch offices, Kearny Mesa at 9212 Balboa Avenue, and Morena Trolley at 5375 Napa Street.
These offices were among our most recent branch openings. Kearny Mesa opened in June 2003 and Morena Trolley in November 2006. It is our intention to remain in these markets with free ATMs within our CO-OP and STAR Networks. Click here to find a list of CO-OP ATMs.
METRO has three full-service branch locations in San Diego County; the Chula Vista, Downtown and El Cajon locations. Saturday hours will continue at the El Cajon location. Click here for the full address and hours for each METRO branch location.
Our Phone Branch will be as close as your telephone and never closes. Call 1-888-907-3628 toll-free or 619-297-4835, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
We also offer free Online Banking here or sign-on page and Text Banking through Sprig Mobile, our 24-hour automated phone service, MetroLine toll free at 800-829-1919, and you can apply online for loans at any time at www.sdmcu.org.
METRO remains absolutely committed to serving our Members and their families. The decision to close the two branches was not an easy one and was arrived at only after thorough analysis and lengthy consideration. However, we believe it is the best option available to ensure we remain as effective and efficient as possible and continue to return maximum value to our evolving membership.
We apologize for the inconvenience these changes will cause you. Please know that in these unprecedented times we will do all we can to support you and this marketplace, now and for many years to come.
Thank you for your continued support. It is always a pleasure serving you.
